Frequently Asked Questions
Overview

Surface Pro X is built from the ground up for connected productivity and will offer a productivity and mobility profile that pairs well in the commercial space.

Organizations already using modern management, security, and productivity solutions (Autopilot, Intune, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, Bitlocker, Microsoft Office 365) are well positioned to take advantage of the unique performance features in Surface Pro X. Customers who have modernized and simplified their line of business apps, integrated Microsoft store (UWP) apps, or utilize remote desktop solutions also stand to benefit. Examples include:

  • High end businesses. Mobile dominant, tech forward businesses across high end retail, high end hospitality and mobile sales reps will be delighted by its ultra-portability and graphic performance.
  • High-end professional services. High-end retail banking, professional services (legal, consulting), and the medical/healthcare industry are on the verge of adopting modern, cloud-based technologies but as of now they most likely require more robust legacy security features and physical dTPM encryption than Surface Pro X can offer today.
  • Education. Surface Pro X is well suited for the educational sector and higher education.

With Windows Autopilot as the recommended deployment option, Surface Pro X devices are well suited for small and medium sized businesses without large scale on-premises infrastructure.

Surface Pro X features a custom processor designed by Qualcomm and Microsoft, which runs the Windows on ARM OS (Cobalt).

No, Only an ARM version.

Surface Pro X will only support LTE and LTE Advanced Pro. On some AT&T networks in the US this is referred to as 5Ge, which is AT&T's branding of LTE Advanced Pro.

No. Surface Pro X is designed to be an always on and always connected PC. All models support LTE connectivity.

Surface Pro X has both a physical tray for nano SIM and eSIM, leveraging the best of our LTE story.

Yes, Surface Pro X has a firmware TPM while Harper, Surface Laptop 3 13” and Surface Laptop 3 15” all have a discrete TPM. BitLocker will still be possible with both, however, some industries desiring or requiring physical drive encryption will be more likely to choose Harper as their preferred 2-in-1.

Surface Pro X is an evolution of the classic Surface Pro form factor.

It is the thinnest, lightest, most mobile Surface 2-in-1 yet with 13” edge-to-edge PixelSense™ display & LTE connectivity.

With its unique processor, Surface Pro X is able to offer powerful performance and always-on 4G connectivity in a thin design.

Surface Pro X supports charging via the USB C ports.

USB-C supports:

  • USB 2.0
  • USB3.1 (Gen1 and Gen2)
  • DP1.4 (HBR3 + DSC) 2 Lanes + USB3.1 (DP Alt Mode pin assignments C and E). (Multi-Function)

Common Questions

The Sim compartment is behind the kickstand on the lower right side of the device facing down.

To open SIM compartment

  1. Using the included SIM Card access tool insert the pin in the hole for the SIM compartment and remove the SIM cover door, as shown in Figure 1.
  2. Slide a nano sim into the SIM slot. It’s normal to see the SIM cover door ejector pin coming a few millimeters out of the device at a slight angle
  3. Replace the SIM cover door by inserting the back side at an angle in the slot and gently pressing the door fully down. The door is magnetically held and will align itself into position once depressed

Surface Slim Pen is a fresh take on the iconic Surface Pen. It stores neatly in the Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard where it also charges wirelessly, so you always have your Pen ready and with you when you need it. A thin and light design based on a carpenter’s pencil for effortless writing. Spend less time setting up your Pen, which automatically connects to your new Surface Pro X. Pick up your Surface Slim Pen and get writing, with an on-screen prompt that gets you to a clean canvas in Microsoft Whiteboard to quickly take notes or jot something down.

Both Surface Pen and Surface Slim Pen support 4096 points of pressure. What we've found is that some people prefer the traditional pen form factor of Surface Pen. A different set of customers prefer writing / sketching / drawing with a drafting pencil form fact which is why we've built the Surface Slim Pen. With Surface Pro X, we've added a storage tray for Surface Slim Pen on the Surface Signature Keyboard, so your pen is always charged and available for you to capture ideas whenever and wherever they strike.

Power

Surface Pro X platform uses a rechargeable Lithium ion cell battery pack specifically designed to attain optimal battery life and power integrity conditions for the design.

Up to 13 hours of battery life for typical Surface device usage.

Charge your Surface Pro X to 80 percent in under an hour.

We recommend using USB C power supplies capable of delivering more than 45W and no lower than 18W.

NOTE: Surface Pro X accepts chargers that operate down to 7.5W. In this case the device may go into “plugged in – not charging” scenarios that will drain the battery or otherwise fail to provide enough power to maintain operation.

A power supply or powered dock connected to the Surface Connect Port has preference over USB C ports.

No, Surface Pro X cannot be charged from a cable or PSU that has legacy (Type A) USB connectors even if converter adapters to USB-C are used.

Because regulations on power use differ across global regions, Surface Pro X includes more adaptive global power tables, which allow devices to automatically set appropriate power and wireless channel and range settings based on their location. Previously, obtaining optimal wireless connectivity required manually changing channel and range settings.

Apps
  • Native ARM applications.
  • X86 applications under emulation mode.
  • Microsoft Store UWP applications. When users attempt to download non-native applications from the store, they will see the architecture as x86 and a notification that the application should work on this device.
  • 64-bit applications will not install or run on your new Surface Surface Pro X. (Many applications are also available in 32-bit x86 versions which will run on Surface Surface Pro X)
  • Certain games and CAD applications will not run if they use a version of OpenGL greater than 1.1 Apps that customize the Windows experience might have problems, like some input method editors, assistive technologies, and cloud storage apps
  • Some third-party antivirus software can’t be installed; however, Windows Security comes pre-installed to help keep you protected
  • Surface device Drivers for hardware, games and apps will only work if they're designed for and compatible with a Windows 10 PC running on an ARM-based processor

No, X64 applications cannot be emulated at this time.

  • Games
  • Professional design applications like 3D, graphics, and video editors.
  • Surface Pro X is out thinnest, lightest, most powerful, most mobile and connected Surface we’ve ever made and it will be a great option for lots of people.
  • For customers that need to run XX specific app, Surface Pro 7 is a great option.

The graphics processing improves many of the most-used scenarios:

  • Faster, smoother, richer web browsing and experiences
  • More optimized multimedia streaming and encoding
  • Support for multiple high-resolution screens when docked

Apps ported to native ARM (x32 bit architecture) run with great CPU and outstanding GPU performance with up to two terra flops of graphic power.

Surface Pro X supports the full version of Office, including 32-bit plug-ins. When you download using click to run, the service detects you are on an ARM device.

In most cases, browsers will provide a comparable user experience run natively or in emulation mode. Edge and Firefox run natively and can be expected to provide the best performance under heavy loads. Internet Explorer and Chrome will run in emulation mode. However, most users are unlikely to notice any discernable difference during typical usage.

It will work in emulation mode (x86 emulated). There is no native ARM Chromium based Edge available at launch.

Mixed reality is not currently supported on ARM.

We will submit all new Surface products for Microsoft Managed Desktop Certification as soon as possible after they launch. We are not currently aware of any policies or product characteristics which would prevent at least iterative generations of products already certified from being included in the Microsoft Managed Desktop program.

Deployment & Management

No. Surface Pro X will be released without a standard Windows .ISO deployment image, which means it is not supported on the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) or operating system deployment methods using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) aka ConfiMgr. Customers relying on image-based deployment should consider Surface Pro 7 while they continue to evaluate the right time to transition to the cloud.

Deploy Surface Pro X using Windows Autopilot.

Expected availability to be announced.

Intune is recommended but not required. Once deployed in Autopilot, you can join Surface Pro X devices to Azure AD or Active Directory (Hybrid Azure AD Join) where you will be able to manage the devices with Intune or co-manage them with SCCM, which will install the 32-bit x86 ConfigMgr client.

Yes, you can manage devices using an eSIM profile in Intune. For more information, refer to Configure eSIM cellular profiles in Intune.
