New to Microsoft Teams? Start a Chat

Table of Contents

When we train our clients on how to use Microsoft Teams, we always tell them the same thing when it comes to getting started. Start a chat.  For many, the chat functionality in Microsoft Teams is identical to other chatting applications they use in their private lives, such as Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, or even just texting from your phone. So, you can see why chat where we like to start.

To create a new chat, click the tiny square and pencil towards to upper-left hand corner and enter in the name or email address of the person you wish to speak with. Please note, you will be restricted to communicating with only members of your organization or external members that have been invited to join your organization.

Now there isn’t a group chat button, but you can easily create one by adding just another member to your original one on one chat. To do so click on the add people button and you will notice your original conversation will be replaced with a blank chat history. That’s because this is a new chat and not a continuation of the existing one on one chat.
