The Autodiscover service enables the Outlook client and some mobile devices to receive their necessary profile settings directly from the Exchange server by using the client’s domain credentials, which makes it much easier to configure the mailbox profiles in your organization.

The Autodiscover service is required to take full advantage of the following Outlook features:

Autodiscover Outlook and ActiveSync configuration
Offline Address Book (OAB)
Calendar Free busy lookup
Calendar Resource Assistant
Out of Office Assistant (OOF)
Exchange 2010 Online Archive
Exchange 2010 Auto mapping

Requirements needed to take advantage of the Auto Discovery Server:

For Exchange 2007 Clients
Contact your DNS provider and add CNAME autodiscover.yourdomain.com. , point it to autodiscover.elephantoutlook.com.
Add a CNAME for each email domain we host for your organization.

For Exchange 2010 Clients
Contact your DNS provider and add CNAME autodiscover.yourdomain.com. , point it to autodiscover.us.elephantoutlook.com.
Add a CNAME for each email domain we host for your organization.

What is a “CNAME” record and when would I need to use it?

CNAME is short for “Canonical Name,” allow you to create alias names to existing Internet Host Records. CNAME records are helpful when pointing multiple domain names to the same host.

1. In the DOMAIN field type in “autodiscover.your_domain_name.com” (without the quotes)
2. From the pull down menu under TYPE, select Alias (CNAME)
3. Click QUERY

If the record is properly setup with your DNS provider, autodiscover.elephantoutlook.com will answer the query.
